Omission of early learning in Schoology

This article references the Secondary Schoology Guidelines.  This video has been provided as an overview of all aspects of assignment creation and configuration in Schoology.

Here we have outlined the agreed upon requirements for configuring and creating assignments in Schoology, as well as important considerations for materials management and organisation.

Reassessment

Reassessment provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate improved understanding of learning goals they initially did not meet at the "exhibiting" proficiency level. Teachers play a vital role in supporting students through this process, ensuring their success and growth.

  • Reassessment throughout the Semester: Reassessment is occurring in a later unit when that assessment is taken the teacher may choose to drop the earlier proficiency level.
  • Task-specific Reassessment: Reassessment occurs within two eight day cycles. The teacher replaces the evidence of learning with the new proficiency and leaves a comment that reflects the change in proficiency.

The Secondary Assessment, Grading and Reporting Agreements outlines reassessment guidelines, such as offering re-learning opportunities, focus on unmet learning goals and maintaining communication with families.  Grades cannot be lowered, and final exams are not eligible for reassessment.

Omitting Early Learning

Omitting early learning from the Gradebook is a practice that allows teachers to provide a more accurate picture of a student's current learning performance and for learning to track their progress. As Schoology averages students' proficiency levels across a Reporting Category, teachers may omit early learning when the early learning does not accurately reflect a student's current proficiency level.

There are three scenarios when you would omit early learning:

  • Scenario 1: Omitting assessment for a class
  • Scenario 2: Omitting assessment for individual student/s
  • Scenario 3: Omitting an individual measurement topic within an assessment with multiple measurement topics.

Scenario 1: Omitting assessment for a class

Subject team decides that entire assessment from early learning should be omitted from the Evidence of Learning. Teachers should edit the assessment for the entire class by un-aligning the Learning Objectives (also known as HKIS Measurement Topics)

1. Locate the assignment in your Schoology Course

2. Edit the assignment

3. Click on the "X" at the end of each Learning Objective to "unalign the task"

4. Press save

Scenario 2: Omitting assessment for individual student/s

Classroom teacher decides that an assessment needs to be omitted from Evidence of Learning for an individual student. The teacher will flag the assessment as “Excused” within the legacy gradebook.

1. Navigate to the Legacy Gradebook from your course page

2. Locate the Assignment in the grading column

3. Find the student you are looking to omit evidence of learning and flag the task as "excused"

Scenario 3: Omitting an individual measurement topic within an assessment with multiple measurement topics

Classroom teacher decides that an individual measurement topic needs to be omitted from Evidence of Learning for an individual student. The teacher will delete this grade for the measurement topic, leaving it blank. A narrative comment should be added to explain this change. This is useful if an assignment is meant to score multiple measurement topics and only one grade needs to be omitted.

2. Locate the Assignment in the grading column

3. Find the student you are looking to omit evidence of learning and edit the rubric so that the individual Learning Objective isn't selected anymore.

4. Add a narrative comment to explain the change and when reassessment will occur.
